Polymorph screens and salt screens are important components for drug development. The goal of polymorph screening is to try to find all possible crystal forms by small-scale crystallization and to select a stable form that can be manufactured and formulated into a dosage form. Salt screens are commonly used to alter the physicochemical properties of a compound for development into an acceptable drug product. Synchrotron XRPD, hot stage optical microscopy, IR microspectroscopy, and Raman microscopy are powerful techniques that can significantly enhance these screens. Are the phases pure, how many pure forms have been found, and what are the thermal properties of each form are just some of the questions that can be answered by these techniques. Additionally, only a few milligrams of material are needed to conduct the studies. To learn more about Improved Pharma’s approach, please refer to this presentation.
